Future Proof

The accountancy profession is quietly but decisively shaping the resilience of global business. The recent news that CPA Australia proposes recommendations for Hong Kong’s 2025 Policy Address illustrates how professional bodies are pushing governments to sharpen fiscal frameworks, creating environments that encourage investment while supporting sustainable economic recovery. It is a reminder that accountants are not only record-keepers but also architects of national competitiveness.

Equally important is the human dimension. ISCA and EY Singapore have launched a career mobility initiative for chartered accountants, a move that highlights the growing recognition that professional agility is now as critical as technical rigour. Nurturing diverse career pathways ensures the profession continues to attract and retain talent capable of navigating an era defined by rapid digital and regulatory shifts.

Closer to home, business rates ‘double hit’ to cost English firms £2.5bn underscores how taxation structures can constrain enterprise if not calibrated carefully. Accountants, often the first to quantify such costs, stand at the intersection of commerce and policy. Their role in articulating the impact on firms positions them as advocates for reform that balances public revenue with economic vitality.

Taken together, these developments speak to a profession that is no longer content with passively interpreting rules. Accountants are increasingly engaged in shaping the systems, policies and careers that will underpin long-term prosperity. In doing so, they demonstrate that accountancy is not only about measuring the past but also about enabling a more adaptive and resilient future.
