Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), in partnership with Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) and The Open University in Northern Ireland, has launched Ireland’s first all-island Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship. The programme creates a new accounting role bridging financial expertise with digital and AI-driven decision-making.
The apprenticeship is designed to deliver BSc (Hons) in Accounting Technology, validated as Level 8 by TUS and Level 6 by The Open University (UK), ensuring cross-border recognition. The first cohort of 24 apprentices began in September 2025, combining academic learning, employer mentorship, and digital training to develop high-value skills in data analytics, cybersecurity, information systems management, and AI-enabled finance operations.
The initiative was launched at Iveagh House by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless, and Northern Ireland’s Minister for the Economy Dr Caoimhe Archibald. Officials highlighted the programme’s role in meeting evolving accounting needs, supporting sustainability reporting, and preparing graduates for ESG-compliant reporting and regulatory frameworks.
Professor Vincent Cunnane, TUS President, noted that the apprenticeship strengthens collaboration between higher education and industry, creating a future-ready workforce. Gillian Doherty, COO of ATI, emphasised that the programme addresses skills gaps in digital transformation, ESG reporting, and AI integration, offering a pathway to sustainable finance careers across Ireland.
The Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship blends practical experience with specialist knowledge, ensuring graduates can support organisations navigating AI adoption, regulatory change, and sustainability mandates. The programme reflects growing demand for accountants who combine technical, digital, and strategic expertise.
